[Derby] Uncoupled entries
>And although Scheinman's article is critical of New York, other racing jurisdictions seem to have even fewer coupled entries than New York does. >Can anyone explain 1) why coupling is done to begin with? 2) is it gradually disappearing? 1) American Tradition--In the UK which has been racing horses way longer there is no coupling of entries. Every horse for themselves. A couple of years ago (I am sure Dave remembers) a rabbit was run to make the pace for his more fancied barnmate. Horse went off at 100-1. His barnmate was like 3-2. Rabbit wins at 100-1 wire to wire :-) 2) it's becoming an anachronism, Jersey runs without coupled entries. I am sure there are others.
