Many thanks to CivRes for the link to the article.  Given that the article is in a US publication, but about gambling in the UK, I found it to be well researched and written.

Listers might be interested in the following:

1.On issues like this, it can be helpful if a person can write about their personal experience.  I closed my Betfair account over 10 years ago.  At that time, Betfair and Paddy Power were separate companies.  I know for a fact that, since the merger of the two companies, Paddy Power have access to a digital copy of the message that I sent to Betfair requesting the closure of my account.  Now that Flutter have acquired Paddy Power/Betfair, this means that ALL companies that Flutter operate in the UK have access to ALL my personal information held by Betfair.  This will include a company like PokerStars, in the unlikely event that I wanted to play online poker.  On a humorous note, it might also include TVG which, of course, operates outside the UK!  I'm not happy about this, but there is little I can do about it.

2.Now let's have some fun.  An @derby lister moves to the UK permanently.  It's Epsom derby day and for some fun they deposit £100 in a new Tote account. Being naive, they follow my tips in the race and lose the whole £100.  Undaunted, two weeks later they deposit another £100 to play at Royal Ascot, and lose that too.  By the time the Breeders Cup comes along, they have lost £1K in total.  They then make another deposit of £100 to play over the two days.

The question is, minutes after making the deposit for the BC, how do you think they might react to receiving the following email?

•                Employment / Self-Employment:

Your salary slips and/or Your bank statement showing regular salary payments into that account from employment.

P60/Self-Assessment Tax Return and/or Your bank statement showing regular salary payments into that account from employment.

•                Retired:

Your pension statement; pension income and/or Your bank statement showing regular pension payments into that account.

•                Inheritance/Savings:

A copy of a letter from the executor detailing the amount to be received by You as a beneficiary under the Will, together with Your bank statement showing the corresponding amount being paid into that account.

Your bank statement showing savings balance along with any evidence around how these savings were achieved or how they originated i.e., from salary/inheritance/property sale.

•                Gambling Winnings:

A copy of Your Account transaction history from a third-party gambling operator in Your name, together with Your bank statement showing the corresponding amount being paid into that account. We would require evidence of the original source of income used prior to your winnings i.e., salary/savings/inheritance.

Betting is a leisure activity, and whilst we recognise this kind of administrative overhead is not particularly fun, it is important to ensure sure we’re all protected.
