[Derby] The Florida Derby
Hello everyone.First of all, shout out to Belinda Stronach who has almost single-handedly driven most horse racing fans on Florida Derby Day out of the track. Unless of course you are willing to spend $400 per person to sit in Ten Palms, or you're willing to stand on a blacktopped apron for 9 straight hours in 90° heat with no place to sit.
You rock, Belinda! So in my mind, which is most likely filled with cobwebs at this point, there are only a few in this with a real shot.
The one I like the best is *CLASSIC CAUSEWAY. *He's run and fared well in several nice races up until now. In his last two he has the look of a colt that does just enough to win. I like that trait, until I don't. Maybe he's smart. Maybe I'm just dumb. Still, he's been very consistent and looks like he could explode here. Absolutely should love the added distance. Nice work at PMM on the 26th and Irad stays. Maybe 3-1. Maybe a bit more.
*SIMPLIFICATION *seems like an obvious choice. But he's already developed a lot from last year and he may be at the wall for now. Still, he won the Fountain and has a nice work since. Jose back up. Chalky exacta if he completes it.
I guess you have to respect *WHITE ABARRIO *though I didn't figure him in the Holy Bull. Has improved steadily since his opening maiden win. I can't help but think that the distance may be an issue here, and more so going forward.
The long shot I really love is *STEAL SUNSHINE*. He's already run the distance and has marched forward since his first start. 2nd last out at 1 1/8 at 25-1 and there may be more in the tank. Bred to like this and more. Must use at what will probably be very long odds.
Finally, long time lister and all around great person Eleanor Gufstafson passed away 4 years ago this week. Lately I find myself thinking about exceptional people I have known throughout the years that I met through this list and it's predecessor, the Prodigy BB. El was one of the finest. She had a great sense of humor, was extremely intelligent and straight forward. RIP, El. I will raise a glass to you and other listers lost over the years tomorrow, from the Palm Beach Kennel Club. Belinda no longer wants us in Hallandale.
